Risk Factors of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia and Prediction in Korea
Park Eun-Ae

Abstract
For the past decade, the survival of very low birth weight infants has increased from the advancement of neonatology. Along with the increase in the survival of the extreme low birth weight infants, preventive and therapeutic strategies for the new bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) have been a hot topic. The classic BPD of the pre-surfactant era is known to be caused by ventilator therapy, high concentration of oxygen, infection, and fibrosis. However, the incidence of new BPD is increasing even without ventilator therapy and the inherent immaturity of the airway is known to be the main cause, putting more emphasis on birth weight and gestational age. I have analyzed the known risk factors of BPD and sought for causes that can be prevented by reviewing published Korean literature from the past decade. The risk factors for BPD cannot be singled out as BPD is a multifactorial condition in which prenatal causes, genetics, prematurity, and postnatal care all play a role. Thus we should practice a multidimensional preventive approach to decrease the incidence of BPD.
